Here’s Mr. Luke Lynch, Dr. Elisavet Andrikopoulou, and Dr. Nima Dadashzade’s paper titled “What is the general population’s perception of smart motorways in the UK?” on IEREK’s Environmental Science and Sustainable Development Journal.

“Motorway users have various opinions about the types of smart motorways. Motorway utilization can be affected if road users have a negative perception of certain types of smart motorways, particularly on the topic of safety. There are three types of smart motorways that can be found in the UK. These are Controlled Smart Motorways (CSM), Dynamic Hard Shoulder (DHS), and All-Lane Running (ALR)”

This previous publication of the international conference on Health & Environmental Resilience and Livability in Cities – HERL discussed the varying opinions of motorway users regarding the different types of smart motorways found in the UK, including Controlled Smart Motorways, Dynamic Hard Shoulder, and All-Lane Running. The study found that negative perceptions of certain types of smart motorways, particularly regarding safety concerns, can impact motorway utilization. Understanding these opinions and concerns can help inform the development and implementation of future smart motorways.
